Synthetic Motor Oil Information
Get the best synthetic motor oil and information here. AMSOIL has a documented history of innovation
and leadership. In 1972, AMS introduced the first American Petroleum Institute rated 100% synthetic motor oil for
automotive applications. AMSOIL was the first to introduce a concept of extended drain intervals with a
recommended 25,000-mile 12-month drain
interval. AMSOIL synthetic motor oil lubricant technology has been field tested over the last
35 years in the most severe driving conditions. Information Including family fleets, over the road big rigs,

High Quality Motor Oil will increase the durability of a motor and its components. It contains
two basic components, base stocks and additives. The quality of these parts will
determine the life of your engine.
BASE STOCKS
The base stock comprises the largest portion of the oil. It lubricates internal engine components, disperses
heat and allows piston rings to seal.
Motor oil base stocks can be composed of petroleum, man made materials or a combination of synthetic and
petroleum called synthetic blend.
A petroleum base stock is made up of many different oil parts that make the final product. Petroleum molecules are
normally long carbon chains that can be sensitive to the stress of heat and “boil off” at relatively low
temperatures.
Engine heat breaks apart these molecular chains, making the properties of the oil different, such as viscosity of
the motor oil.
Synthetic base stock molecules are uniformly shaped, helping them resist the stress of heat. Because these
synthetic engine oils are built of these evenly shaped molecules, they have a low “boil off” rate and their
physical components, like the viscosity, do not allow the change to take place.
ADDITIVES
The various chemicals that comprise a motor oil’s additive system provide anti wear and foam, rust and
deterioration protection, acid neutralization, viscosity maintenance, detergency and dispersancy properties.
Additives help modern motor oils meet the increasing demands of today’s high-tech engines.
Synthetic additive quality differs throughout the luricant industry, ranging from a bare minimum with some oils to
comply with certain requirements, to exceptionally high quality motor oils, such as AMSOIL motor oils..
WHAT A MOTOR OIL MUST DO
Today's motor oil is a highly developed product carefully specialized by engineers and chemists to perform many
important functions.
A motor oil must:
- Permit easy starting
- Lubricate engine parts and prvent wear
- Protect against rust and corrosion
- Keep engine parts clean
- Minimize combustion chamber deposits
- Cool engine parts
- Seal combustion pressures
- Resist foaming Aid in fuel
IMPROVEMENTS IN OIL
Motor oil quality has changed quit a bit in the past 40 years, and tough demands on lubricants in todays motor
designs call for oils that meet stringent requirements. Differences in an oil’s ability to meet these requirements
determine which service classification and viscosity grade it may receive.
Viscosity
Viscosity of an oil refers to flow and is the most important quality of an oil. The viscosity of oil varies with
changes in temperature and is thin when heated, thickens when its cold. Quality oil must flow when it's cold to
lubricate internal engine parts upon starting, but it must also be thicker to protect the engine at high operating
temperatures.
When an oil is used at a changing temps, as it is in most motors, the change in thickness should be as small as can
be.
The measure of an oil’s thickness change is called the Viscosity Index (VI) number) as the number gets higher, you
need the smallest viscosity adjustment which provides better the oil protection for the engine.
The number does not tell the actual thickness or thinness of the oil in high and low temp variants; it represents
the rate of change with temperature adjustment.
Viscosity helpers are viscous chemical additives called polymers or polymeric additives, that decrease the rate at
which oils change viscosity with temperature. Viscosity additives extend a engine oil’s operating temp range and
allow the manufacture of multiple grade or all-weather oils. Cheaper quality viscosity improvers, unfortunately,
lead to metal shearing.
AMSOIL Lubricants
AMSOIL dramatically outperform conventional petroleum motor oils. Synthetic lubricants are engineered,
synthesized lubricants consisting of 100% PAO Formulated Basestock Technology, and maybe made to fulfill virtually
every lubricating need. The molecular uniformity of synthetic lubricants promote superior lubrication and friction
reduction, which in turn promotes superior heat control, wear control and energy efficiency. Molecular uniformity
also helps synthetics maintain their protective viscosity in high-temperature operations, which also promotes
superior wear control. Because they are derived from pure chemicals, They contain no contaminants or molecules
that don’t pull their own weight. They contain no paraffin or wax molecules like conventional
lubricants.

AMSOIL Signature Series Line (25 k mile/1 yr drain interval)
AMSOIL 0W-20 (ASM), 5W-30 (ASL) and 10W-30 (ATM) Synthetic Motor Oils join AMSOIL Signature
Series 0W-30 to round out the new Signature Series line. Signature Series 0W-30 is now identified by product code
AZO. Product code SSO will be discontinued and is only available while supplies last.
In addition to being reformulated to meet the latest API SN Resource Conserving and ILSAC GF-5
industry specifications, the new Signature Series line features all-new packaging and represents the very best
motor oils AMSOIL has to offer, allowing motorists to take advantage of maximum extended drain intervals. In the
interest of consistency and clarity within the Signature Series line, all four motor oils are recommended for drain
intervals of up to 25,000 miles/one year, whichever comes first (15,000 miles/one year in severe
service conditions). Click to see 25 k mile oil page.

AMSOIL XL Extended Life Synthetic Motor Oils
(10 k mile/6 mo drain interval)
